Pre-school medical examination
The pre-school medical examination is carried out on children approximately 12–18 months before they reach school age. In accordance with the School Act of the State of Saxony-Anhalt (Section 37(2) SchulG LSA; GVBI.LSA p. 68 of 22 February 2013), this is a compulsory examination. It serves to assess your child’s age-appropriate development in preparation for their forthcoming start at school.
The examination and documentation of vaccination status is also governed by Section 9(2) of the Saxony-Anhalt Health Services Act (GDG LSA; GVBI. LSA p. 1023 of 21 November 1997) and in Section 34(11) of the Infection Protection Act (IFSG; BGBI. I p. 1045 of 20 July 2000)
At the parents’ request, or if it is found that a child’s development is not age-appropriate, individual advice on possible support programmes can be provided. If necessary, a new appointment may need to be arranged.
Please bring the following to the examinations:
- the child health check-up booklet (the yellow ‘U-Heft’)
- the vaccination card
- the completed parents’ questionnaire (which will be sent to you with the proposed appointment)
- if applicable: glasses, hearing aid and previous medical records
Routine medical check-ups during school (Years 3 and 6)
The routine medical screening for Year 3 and Year 6 pupils is carried out in accordance with the following legislation:
- § Section 9 (2) of the Saxony-Anhalt Health Service Act (GDG LSA; GVBI. LSA p. 1023 of 21 November 1997)
- § Section 38 of the School Act of the State of Saxony-Anhalt (SchulG LSA; GVBI. LSA p. 68 of 22 February 2013)
- Ordinance on school medical examinations of 29 August 2000
The examination is mandatory.
Please bring the following to the examinations:
- the vaccination card
- the completed parental questionnaire

Pre-school medical examination from 2026
From June 2026, the procedure for the pre-school medical examination in the Salzlandkreis will change.
In future, developmental screening of children to assess their cognitive (e.g. language, motor skills, thinking and memory skills, attention and concentration), emotional and social maturity will be carried out by trained medical assistants.
If developmental delays are known or identified during the examination, a doctor is consulted.
The aim is to assess whether your child has the personal maturity required to start school. At the same time, the assessment will identify any areas where your child may need extra support, so that you have the opportunity to help your child reduce or overcome these difficulties before they start school.
The child’s most recent routine health check-up (U-check-up) prior to the school entry medical is considered the physical examination. These are the U8/U9 check-ups (depending on the child’s age at the time of the school entry medical). As parents, you must ensure that these check-ups are carried out by your paediatrician and recorded in the yellow U-Heft. This will save you and your child from having to make a second visit to the doctor as part of the school entry examination.
In addition to the developmental screening, your child will always undergo an eye test and a hearing test, and their blood pressure, height and weight will be measured.
The aim of this change in procedure is to ensure that, in future, all children can once again be examined as part of the pre-school medical examination before they start school, so that all children are placed on an equal footing in this respect.
