Applying for an extension of your residence permit to take part in the Federal Voluntary Service
Service description
You can apply to extend your residence permit if you wish to continue taking part in the Federal Voluntary Service.
In principle, the same conditions must be met for the renewal of a residence permit as for its initial grant.
The residence permit will be extended for the duration of participation in the Federal Voluntary Service, up to a maximum of 18 months in total. In exceptional cases, an extension of up to 24 months is possible if this can be justified within the framework of a specific educational programme.
Procedure
- You must apply for a residence permit before your current one expires.
- Find out whether your foreigners authority allows you to apply online or has a special application form.
- If applications can only be made in person, please make an appointment with the Foreigners’ Registration Office responsible for your place of residence. If you are applying online, please follow the Foreigners’ Registration Office’s instructions for making an appointment.
- During your appointment, your identity and documents will be checked (please bring your original documents with you to the appointment). Your fingerprints and signature will also be recorded for the electronic residence permit (eAT card).
- You will receive a letter informing you that your application has been approved and that the Bundesdruckerei has been commissioned to produce your eaT card, or that your application has been rejected.
- You will be notified when you can collect your eAT card from the Foreigners’ Registration Office. As the eAT card is linked to an online identification function, you must collect it in person.
Prerequisites
To extend a residence permit, the same conditions must be met as for the initial grant of a residence permit, namely:
- You are a national of a non-EU or non-EEA country.
- You are already undertaking a Federal Voluntary Service programme, the originally agreed duration of which was limited to less than 24 months.
- You have agreed an extension of your service with the host organisation and can justify the need for this if the total duration of your service exceeds 18 months.
- You can support yourself (including health insurance cover) for the entire duration of your voluntary service without having to rely on state benefits. The fact that the Federal Voluntary Service is subsidised by the federal government does not prevent you from being granted a residence permit.
- There are no grounds relating to public security or public order that would prevent you from staying in Germany. There are no grounds for your deportation.
- In the case of minors: consent has been given by the persons authorised to exercise parental responsibility for the continuation of the stay.
Which documents are required?
In principle, to renew your residence permit, you must submit the same documents as you did when it was first issued:
- Recognised and valid identity document (e.g. passport or passport substitute)
- Current biometric photo in passport format (45 x 35 mm)
- Proof of the intention to continue participating in the Federal Voluntary Service (for example, an extended agreement with the Federal Voluntary Service provider). If the intended total duration exceeds 18 months, specific reasons must be given for the extension.
- Evidence of sufficient means of support (for example, personal assets, proof of income, a blocked account, a pension notice, proof of receipt of benefits such as parental allowance or child benefit, maintenance payments, a declaration of commitment)
- For minors: a declaration of consent from their legal guardians regarding their continued participation in the Federal Voluntary Service
The documents and information must always be submitted in German. In individual cases, the foreigners authority may require less or further evidence.
What fees are incurred?
Fee amount (fixed):
- 96.00 euros for a further stay of up to three months
- 93.00 euros for a further stay of more than three months
Remarks:
Additional fees may apply for the issuing of a residence permit in the form of an electronic residence permit (eAT card), which can also be used as electronic proof of identity.
The time and form in which fees are charged and paid vary depending on the authority.
In certain cases, fee reductions or exemptions may apply (e.g. for persons entitled to asylum or recognised refugees). Lower fees may apply for Turkish nationals.
What deadlines do I have to observe?
Application deadline: You should apply for your residence permit no later than 6 to 8 weeks before your current residence permit expires.
Period of validity: Upon renewal, the residence permit is once again issued for a fixed term corresponding to the planned duration of the Federal Voluntary Service, usually for a maximum of 18 months. In exceptional cases, the residence permit may be extended for up to 24 months if this can be justified within the framework of a specific educational programme.

- There is no automatic entitlement to an extension of a residence permit for the purpose of participating in the Federal Voluntary Service. Decisions are always made on a case-by-case basis.
- The residence permit is valid only for the purposes of participating in the Federal Voluntary Service. If the purpose of the stay changes, the relevant immigration authority must be notified immediately.
- The proceedings are usually conducted in German. If your knowledge of German is insufficient, it is advisable to attend the hearing with someone who can act as a translator.
- All information provided to the Immigration Office should be correct and complete to the best of your knowledge and belief so that the request can be processed without major delays.
- Incorrect or incomplete information can slow down the procedure and be detrimental to the person concerned. In serious cases, incorrect or incomplete information that is not completed or corrected in good time vis-à-vis the immigration authority can result in the cancellation of residence rights that have already been granted, a fine, a prison sentence of up to three years or expulsion from the federal territory.
