Applying for authorisation to practise veterinary medicine on a temporary basis for vets from EU Member States
Service description
If you have completed your training as a vet but do not hold a licence to practise, and wish to practise veterinary medicine only on a temporary basis, you will need a permit.
This licence entitles you to use the professional title ‘veterinarian’.
The permit may be restricted to specific activities and places of employment.
It may only be granted or extended on a revocable basis and only for a total period of veterinary practice not exceeding four years.
Procedure
- To obtain authorisation to practise veterinary medicine on a temporary basis, you must submit an application, either in writing or electronically, to the relevant authority in the federal state in which you intend to practise veterinary medicine.
- The relevant authority will decide whether to grant the permit after reviewing your documents.
Prerequisites
To obtain authorisation to practise veterinary medicine on a temporary basis,
- you must provide evidence that you have completed your veterinary training
- you must not have engaged in any conduct which would render you unfit or untrustworthy to practise the veterinary profession
- you must not be unfit, for health reasons, to practise as a veterinary surgeon
- you must have the German language skills required for the role at level B2 in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, and
- You will need proof of a specific job.
Which documents are required?
The following documents must be submitted:
- Application for a licence to practise veterinary medicine on a temporary basis,
- Proof of nationality (certified copy of an identity card, passport or other proof of identity),
- proof of professional qualifications (a veterinary degree, examination certificate or other evidence of veterinary competence or training),
- where applicable, certified proof of asylum status, a permit under the Residence Act, or confirmation of eligibility for naturalisation
- Signed CV in table format: up-to-date, concise and containing a detailed account of your education and career history with no gaps in the timeline
- Certificate from the prospective employer confirming the possibility of employment and the grounds for it (e.g. employment contract, needs assessment)
- Proof of no criminal record, certificate of good conduct for submission to a public authority (This certificate must not be more than 3 months old at the time of application.)
- A medical certificate confirming that you are medically fit to practise as a veterinary surgeon (a certificate from a public health officer is not required; this certificate must not be more than 3 months old at the time of application).
The documents may be submitted to the relevant authority without having to comply with any specific formal requirements.
Please note: You must enclose a German translation of any documents in a foreign language. The translation must be carried out by a sworn translator. You must submit certified translations of diplomas and certificates relating to your veterinary training.
What fees are incurred?
The procedure costs money. The relevant authority will inform you of the costs. The costs often depend on the amount of work involved in processing the application.
In addition, further costs may be incurred (e.g. for translations or certifications). These costs vary from case to case.
What deadlines do I have to observe?
The application must be submitted before you start working as a vet.
Processing time
A decision on the application will be made within 3 months of the submission of the complete documentation.
