"NaturWasserMensch" funding project

The immediate funding programme run by the Ministry of Science, Energy, Climate Protection and the Environment of the State of Saxony-Anhalt provides support for projects in the fields of natural, species and aquatic ecology that are relevant to people.
For the project “Creation of a mixed-fruit orchard with a fruit tree hedge as a boundary and the removal of invasive plant species from a district-owned green space, as well as the creation of bat roosts and nesting sites for (semi-)cave-nesting birds at the district administration building”, the Salzlandkreis received funding from this programme.
The Salzlandkreis owns a meadow at its Aschersleben site which is in need of maintenance and has a plant population that is, in part, ecologically problematic, in the form of invasive neophytes such as the ash maple.
This meadow is to be ecologically enhanced by removing the non-native plants and creating a traditional orchard meadow bordered by hedges. In addition, nesting boxes and bat boxes are to be installed on the administrative building in Aschersleben to provide breeding and rearing habitats for endangered bird and bat species.
These measures will therefore create additional food sources for birds, insects and bats, as well as breeding sites for birds and bats. The aim is to enhance biodiversity at a local level.
At the same time, fruit trees help to protect the climate: they sequester carbon dioxide, purify the air of particulate matter and produce oxygen.
As the project is being carried out on land accessible to all members of the public, it offers a hands-on, real-life example of climate and nature conservation.
The project also fulfils measure MN 11, ‘Reforestation of a section of land owned by the district’, as set out in the Salzlandkreis Integrated Climate Protection Concept. Due to the structure of the ‘NaturWasserMensch’ funding programme, the implementation of measure MN 11, as originally described, has been slightly adjusted; however, it continues to fulfil its intended purpose.
The project is 90 per cent funded by the State of Saxony-Anhalt’s ‘NaturWasserMensch’ emergency funding programme. The total cost amounts to approximately EUR 16,000.00.
