Residence permit for the purpose of taking up highly skilled employment: applying for an extension
Service description
The EU Blue Card is a temporary residence permit. It was issued for a fixed period. You can apply to extend your EU Blue Card if your employment is due to continue beyond the period of validity of your EU Blue Card.
Apply to the immigration authority responsible for your place of residence to extend your EU Blue Card no later than eight weeks before it expires.
The same conditions apply to the renewal of the EU Blue Card as to its initial issue. In particular, you must be able to provide evidence of an employment contract specifying a minimum salary and be in employment commensurate with your qualifications.
If you were required to attend an integration course when your residence permit was first issued, this will be taken into account when your residence permit is renewed. If you have not yet attended an integration course, the Foreigners’ Registration Office may reject your application to renew your residence permit. If you have not yet completed the integration course, your residence permit will generally only be extended for one year at a time until you have successfully completed the course or provided evidence that you have otherwise integrated into social and community life.
If your EU Blue Card is renewed, it will once again be valid for a limited period.
The Blue Card is renewed for a maximum of four years. If the duration of the employment contract is less than four years, the EU Blue Card is renewed for the duration of the employment contract plus three months.
The Blue Card cannot be renewed if this was already ruled out at the time of issue or at the time of the most recent renewal.
