Apply for vehicle re-registration
Service description
If you have deregistered your vehicle, you can re-register it at any time. Upon re-registration, the motor vehicle will be re-registered to you. If you have moved or purchased a deregistered used vehicle, the vehicle owner data will be updated when you re-register. Catch up on any vehicle
inspections
that are due If a general inspection, emissions test or safety inspection was due between the time the vehicle was deregistered and the time you applied to re-register it, this must be carried out before the vehicle can be re-registered.
Expert opinion required after long period of decommissioning
If the vehicle and owner data have already been deleted from the Central Vehicle Register (7 years after deregistration) and the data can no longer be verified elsewhere, an expert opinion from an officially recognised expert is required.
New number plate may be required If the number plate was not
reserved when the vehicle was deregistered or if the vehicle is being re-registered to a different owner, a new number plate must be applied for.Procedure
You can also apply for re-registration via the website of the competent registration authority if you were the last owner of the vehicle when it was deregistered and the same registration authority is still responsible for you.
The prerequisites for this are also
- an identity card with electronic proof of identity function,
- a new registration certificate part I (vehicle registration document),
- a licence plate reservation (for a maximum of one year) made at the time of deregistration (decommissioning).
Note: The new registration certificate part I (the vehicle registration document) has a concealed but visible security code on it, which can be recognised by a silver sticker.
Which documents are required?
- Valid identity card or passport with registration certificate,
- Proof of the authorisation to dispose of the holder to be registered (if this is not evident from one of the following documents):
- old vehicle registration document or
- Registration certificate part I (ZB I) or part II (ZB II) or
- EC Certificate of Conformity (COC document) and
- Purchase contract, if no ZB II (vehicle registration document) has been issued.
- ZB I or, if applicable, deregistration certificate,
- Proof of a valid main inspection (e.g. by means of the deregistration certificate, the ZB I or the last report on the main inspection),
- electronic insurance confirmation,
- existing licence plates, if the licence plate has been reserved for you,
- SEPA direct debit mandate (direct debit authorisation),
- if the ZB I is no longer available and the vehicle was taken out of service more than 7 years ago, other proof of the vehicle's technical data (EC Certificate of Conformity (COC document), manufacturer's data confirmation, certificate of individual authorisation).
- If none of these documents are available, an expert opinion from an officially recognised expert in accordance with § 21 of the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO) is required.
- If the vehicle has been modified after being taken out of service (deregistration) in a way that requires approval (e.g. aluminium rims, spoiler, auxiliary heating), the vehicle must be inspected by an officially recognised expert (e.g. TÜV Nord) or a test engineer (TÜV Nord, DEKRA, GTÜ, KÜS, FSP, TÜV Hanse, TÜV Rheinland, TÜV Süd) in accordance with § 19 Para. 3 StVZO before registration.
- In the event of serious modifications (changes to the vehicle type or exhaust/noise behaviour, danger to road users), the vehicle must only be inspected by an officially recognised expert in accordance with Section 19 (2) StVZO. The certificate issued for the inspection/approval must be presented at the time of registration.
What fees are incurred?
Fees are charged by the licensing authorities for re-registration on the basis of the scale of fees for road traffic measures.
