Service description
Childcare involves the care and support of your child at a childcare facility, such as a crèche, a nursery, an after-school club or a day-care centre.
Day care centres have the following tasks:
- They promote the child's development into a self-determined, independent and socially competent personality.
- They support and supplement the upbringing and education in the family.
- They help parents to better reconcile working life, child rearing and family care.
The support mandate includes the upbringing, education and care of the child. It relates to the child's social, emotional, physical and mental development. It includes the teaching of guiding values and rules.
The support should be orientated towards the following characteristics of the children:
- Age
- State of development
- linguistic and other skills
- Life situation
- Interests and needs
- ethnic origin.
You conclude a childcare contract with the daycare centre provider. In the childcare contract, you specify the scope of care.
Procedure
You should obtain information from the responsible office in good time and register your wishes, for example the scope or location of childcare.
Personal contact or a personal meeting between you and the childcare centre is also useful and usually possible. Many centres offer an introduction to their facility before enrolment or before signing a childcare contract.
Who should I contact?
The districts and independent cities are responsible as local youth welfare organisations. They must provide evidence of free places.
Prerequisites
- Children up to their 3rd birthday: Your child may go to a crèche.
- From their 3rd birthday until they start school: your child can go to a kindergarten.
- From the time your child starts school until their 14th birthday or until they start Year 7: your child is allowed to attend an after-school care centre.
- The habitual residence of your child is in Saxony-Anhalt.
What fees are incurred?
You may be required to pay a contribution towards the cost of your child’s care and support at a nursery or childminder’s. The amount depends on the agreed hours of care.
If you receive child benefit for two or more children and these children are all attending childcare centres or childminders at the same time, you will pay, in total, no more than the contribution towards costs for the oldest of these children in childcare, provided the children are not yet of school age,
A different rule applies until 31 December 2026: If you receive child benefit for two or more children and they are all being looked after in childcare centres or at childminders at the same time, you will only pay the contribution towards costs for the oldest child in care and for each additional child in care who is already attending school.
As parents or guardians, you are required to pay the catering costs. These include the costs of food, preparation and delivery of the meals and drinks provided.

What else should I know?
In Saxony-Anhalt, children are legally entitled to a full-day place in a day-care centre or day-care facility from birth.
The legal entitlement is fulfilled when the local public youth welfare organisation provides the entitled person or the parents with proof of a free place within a reasonable distance.
