Applying for a residence permit for self-employed persons who have completed a degree or who work as academics or researchers
Service description
If you have successfully completed your studies at a state or state-recognised university or a comparable educational institution within Germany, or if you hold a residence permit as a researcher or academic, you may apply for a residence permit to carry out self-employed work.
The requirement for university graduates is that they have successfully completed a degree programme that qualifies them to carry out self-employed work. Your intended self-employed work must therefore be related to the knowledge you have acquired during your university studies.
If you hold a residence permit as a researcher or scientist, the self-employed activity you intend to pursue must be clearly related to your previous work as a researcher or scientist.
A residence permit for the purpose of self-employment is a temporary residence permit. It is granted for a maximum of three years and may be renewed.
Procedure
- Find out whether your foreigners authority allows you to apply online or has a special application form.
- If the application can only be submitted in person, make an appointment at the Foreigners' Registration Office. If you apply online, the Foreigners' Registration Office will contact you after receiving your application to arrange an appointment.
- During the appointment, your identity and documents will be checked (please bring your documents to the appointment, preferably in the original).
- If your application is approved, your fingerprints will be taken for the production of a new electronic residence permit (eAT card). The Foreigners’ Registration Office commissions the Bundesdruckerei to produce the eAT card. Once it is ready, you will be notified and can collect your residence permit from the relevant office.
