Extension of a residence permit to continue a course of study commenced in another EU country
Service description
If you come from a country outside the European Union (EU), have been studying in another EU Member State for at least two years and are recognised there as a person entitled to protection, you may be granted a residence permit to continue your studies in Germany.
This residence permit is a temporary residence permit. If your residence permit is due to expire soon, you can have it extended, for example for
- the duration of a compulsory stage of study, or
- an exchange programme that has not yet come to an end.
The same conditions apply to the extension of a residence permit for the purpose of study as to its initial grant. As a rule, you cannot extend your residence permit if the Foreigners’ Registration Office has already ruled this out at the time of its initial grant or at the time of the most recent extension.
With the residence permit you have been granted for the purpose of studying, you are allowed to work for up to 140 days a year. You may also take on part-time student work without any restrictions.
