Apply for a red vehicle registration number (06 series) for test drives and transport journeys

In Germany, you are generally only permitted to use vehicles that have been registered. However, as a dealer, garage or manufacturer in the motor vehicle sector, certain exceptions apply to you for specific journeys:

• Test drives: Demonstrating and assessing roadworthiness
• Transport journeys: Transporting a vehicle to another location

Journeys to refuel and have the vehicle cleaned, as well as for necessary repairs and maintenance work, are also permitted.

In such cases, you can apply for a special number plate. These are red number plates beginning with the number ‘06’ – also known as dealer number plates. You will be granted a temporary or revocable licence, which may cover several vehicles if necessary.

If you use a red number plate, you must keep a vehicle registration document. You can obtain this document from the relevant registration authority.

As a private individual, you are not permitted to use a red number plate.
