School transport - apply for reimbursement of costs
Service description
If your child attends a school in Saxony-Anhalt that is not within walking distance, the district or independent city offers transport. In most cases, the schools are integrated into the local public transport system (e.g. bus or train) or there is a school bus.
If no transport is organised by the district or district-free city, you may be able to have the travel costs between your main place of residence and the nearest school of the chosen type of school reimbursed.
In the following cases, pupils in an area are entitled to reasonable transport or the respective legal guardians are entitled to reimbursement of the necessary expenses by the responsible school transport provider:
- Attendance at a general education school up to and including the 10th grade or
- Attendance at a special school or
- Participation in the vocational preparation year or
- Participation in the first school year of those vocational schools whose admission requirements do not include an intermediate school-leaving certificate
and,
- Exceeding the minimum distance determined by the school transport organisation or
- in the event of a disability, regardless of the minimum distance.
In certain cases, there is also an entitlement to reimbursement of transport costs if the school attended is not the nearest school.
Procedure
- You apply to your district or city for reimbursement of the travel costs for your child.
- The responsible office will check whether you can get a refund.
- If this is the case, you will be reimbursed for the necessary school transport costs.

Prerequisites
- Your child lives in Saxony-Anhalt and goes to school here.
- No school transport is offered by the district or the independent city.
Other requirements must also be met, for example the minimum distance to the school. The responsible office will advise you.

None.
What deadlines do I have to observe?
If the travel costs for the previous school year are to be reimbursed, please submit the application by 30 September of each year.

A complaint can be filed with the competent administrative court against the decisions of the districts or independent cities.

The necessary forms are issued by the districts or independent cities via the schools.
Some districts and independent cities also make these available on the Internet.
What else should I know?
In the following cases, there is an entitlement to cost relief (pro rata reimbursement of travel costs). In these cases, a personal contribution of EUR 100 per school year must be paid:
- Attendance of school years 11 and 12 of a grammar school, attendance of school years 11 to 13 of a comprehensive school, a community school or an independent Waldorf school or
- Attendance at a vocational college, a technical college, a specialised secondary school or a vocational grammar school.
