Apply for permission to remove or alter protected landscape features (such as tree-lined avenues)

Trees produce vital oxygen, improve the climate, filter dust and pollutants, and help to maintain humidity and air circulation. They provide habitats for a wide variety of animals, enliven and structure the urban or rural landscape, and reduce noise. To ensure that trees are preserved, they are given special protection – particularly in densely populated areas.

If you wish to fell a tree, you may need a permit. You may also be required to provide compensation for the tree that has been felled. A felling permit is required in particular where trees are subject to special protection.

If a tree is protected as a ‘protected landscape feature’ in a built-up area or within a tree-lined avenue, you must apply for a special permit to fell it.
