Applying for an extension of the driving licence to category T
Service description
You can extend your driving licence to include the independent driving licence category T.
With a category T driving licence, colloquially known as a "large trailer driving licence", you are permitted to drive the following vehicles with trailers:
- Tractors intended and used for agricultural or forestry purposes with a maximum design speed of 60 km/h (from 16 to 18 years: 40 km/h)
- self-propelled machinery and feed mixers intended and used for these purposes with a maximum design speed of 40 km/h
The category T driving licence is issued for an unlimited period.
Driving licence category T is a national category. It is only valid to a limited extent in other countries.

Prerequisites
- You must have your normal place of residence in the Federal Republic of Germany.
- You must be at least 16 years old.
Which documents are required?
- Valid identity card or passport (with current registration certificate if applicable)
- Application for extension of driving licence
- a biometric photo in accordance with the provisions of the Passport Ordinance (size 45x35 mm)
- Eye test certificate (not older than two years)
- Proof of first aid training (if not already provided to the driving licence authority)
- valid driving licence
- If applicable, a copy of the file card from the last issuing authority (if authority is different)
- Details of the driving school
What fees are incurred?
The fee is based on the scale of fees for road traffic measures (GebOSt). If the driving licence is sent directly to your home address, an additional postage fee will be charged.
What deadlines do I have to observe?
Your application to extend your driving licence will lapse if you have not passed the theory test within 12 months of receiving the test order or the practical test within 12 months of passing the theory test.
