Applying for an extension of a driving licence with a limited period of validity
Service description
The driving licence for categories C, CE, C1 or C1E, D, DE, D1 or D1E is issued for a maximum of five years and can be extended by five years at the request of the licence holder.

Which documents are required?
- Official proof of place and date of birth (e.g. identity card, passport)
- Previous driving licence
- a current photograph that complies with the provisions of the Passport Ordinance (biometric, size 45 mm x 35 mm, portrait format)
- Proof of vision in accordance with the template in Appendix 6 No. 2 of the Driving Licence Regulation.
The certificate can be issued by an ophthalmologist, a company or occupational physician, or a doctor from the public health department. An issued report/certificate is valid for 2 years. - Proof of physical and mental fitness in accordance with the template in Appendix 5 of the Driving Licence Regulations.
You can have the certificate issued by any doctor. At the time of application, the certificate must not be more than one year old. - In addition, for categories D, D1, DE, D1E, if you have reached the age of 50, a performance psychology certificate. The certificate must not be older than one year at the time of application.
What fees are incurred?
The fee is based on the current version of the scale of fees for road traffic measures.
What deadlines do I have to observe?
The application can be submitted at the earliest six months before the expiry date of the previous driving licence.
Please note: If the application is submitted after the expiry date of the previous driving licence, a new driving licence will be issued instead of an extension. The fact that you were previously the holder of a corresponding driving licence is then no longer evident from the new licence.

Regardless of whether it is a genuine extension or a new licence (due to late application), a new driving licence will always be issued.
