Requesting the return of your driving licence
Service description
If your driving licence has been revoked, you must reapply for it at the driving licence authority responsible for your main place of residence. The same regulations (§ 20 FeV) apply for this new licence as for the first licence. You should submit the application for a new driving licence at least eight to ten weeks before the end of the suspension period due to the sometimes very long processing time.
Who should I contact?
You can apply for a new driving licence at the driving licence authority responsible for your district or city (main place of residence). You must appear in person at the driving licence authority for this.
Which documents are required?
Please call the relevant office in advance to clarify which documents need to be submitted in each individual case.
General:- Application form (created at the driving licence authority)
- Proof of name, address, place and date of birth by presenting an identity card or passport
- Photograph that complies with the provisions of the Passport Ordinance (biometric suitability of the passport photo)
- Current registration certificate from the registration office responsible for the main place of residence (registration certificate must only be submitted if no valid identity card is available)
- Details of previous possession of a domestic or foreign driving licence
- Driving school providing training, if applicable (if driving licence tests are required - see notes)
- A certificate of good conduct stating the purpose of "new driver's licence" must be applied for at the residents' registration office responsible for the main place of residence (certificate of good conduct)
Classes AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE, L, T:
- Eye test certificate from optician or certificate/ophthalmological certificate (not older than 2 years)
- Proof of first aid training
Classes C, C1, CE, C1E, D, D1, DE, D1E:
- Ophthalmological certificate (not older than 2 years)
- Certificate of medical examination (not older than 1 year)
- Proof of first aid training
Additionally for categories D, D1, DE, D1E:
- Proof of suitability for the special requirements in accordance with
Appendix 5 No. 2.2 FeV (not older than one year)

What else should I know?
If there are concerns about physical and mental fitness, the submission of specialist medical reports by doctors with traffic medicine qualifications or medical-psychological reports may be ordered.
