Driving licence for categories B and BE for accompanied driving from the age of 17
Service description
You can drive a category B and BE vehicle (car) in Germany at the age of 17 if
- you have passed the driving licence test and
- you are accompanied by an authorised and previously appointed person.
You may drive the vehicle unaccompanied on the date of your 18th birthday.
However, if you drive a vehicle before your 18th birthday without being accompanied by a named person, your driving licence will be revoked. In addition
- a fine,
- one point on the driving licence register,
- the extension of the probationary period and
- the ordering of an advanced training seminar.
Who should I contact?
You can submit the application to the driving licence authority responsible for your district or city. It is also possible to apply via the driving school where you complete your theoretical and practical driving training.
Which documents are required?
- Valid identity card or passport (identity document can also be an electronic residence permit (eAT) or similar)
- with current registration certificate, if applicable
- Current biometric photo (size 45x35 mm, portrait format, frontal view)
- Proof of first aid training
- Eye test certificate (not older than 2 years)
- Application form for participation in accompanied driving from the age of 17
- Application form for each accompanying person
What fees are incurred?
- The fee is based on the scale of fees for road traffic measures (GebOSt).
- If the driving licence is sent directly to your home address, an additional shipping fee will be charged.

- Driving licence issued for the first time for accompanied driving from the age of 17 for category B
- By participating in "accompanied driving from 17", the minimum age for obtaining a category B and BE driving licence is reduced to 17 years
- If a person takes part in "accompanied driving from 17" and passes the driving test, they first receive a test certificate
- with the test certificate, the person may drive a vehicle of categories B and BE in Germany before their 18th birthday accompanied by a named and authorised person
