Applying for the transfer of a driving licence from the European Economic Area (EEA)/European Union (EU)
Service description
If you have a driving licence from a country of the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA) and have moved to Germany, you must have your driving licence transferred in the following cases:
- the validity of your driving licence ends,
- the validity of individual driving licence categories ends.
The German period of validity applies to driving licence categories that are limited in Germany (categories C and D as well as corresponding subcategories and trailer categories). This also applies if no or longer periods are entered in the foreign driving licence.
EU/EEA driving licence for non-harmonised categories:
If you wish to drive a motor vehicle in Germany, you must have your driving licence transferred.
For EU/EEA driving licences of harmonised classes (classes AM, A1, A2, A, B, BE, C1, C1E, C, CE, D1, D1E, D and DE):
You do not need a transcription.

Which documents are required?
- Valid identity card or passport (if necessary with current confirmation of registration)
- Current biometric photo (size 45mm x 35mm, portrait format, frontal view)
- Valid driving licence from an EU or EEA country
What fees are incurred?
The fee is based on the scale of fees for road traffic measures (GebOSt).
If the driving licence is sent directly to your home address, an additional shipping fee will be charged.
