Service description
The guiding principle of property restitution is that assets must be returned to their former owners or their heirs. However, this principle of restitution is set aside in favour of bona fide acquirers of ownership or rights in rem (for example, in the so-called ‘home-builder’ cases) and in those cases where restitution is precluded for factual or legal reasons.
If restitution is not possible, the former owner is entitled to compensation. In principle, they could also opt for compensation instead of restitution. Details, in particular regarding the amount of compensation, are set out in the Compensation Act and, for victims of Nazi persecution, in the Act on Compensation for Victims of Nazi Persecution.Who should I contact?
