Schönebeck. Visitors can discover and rediscover the Salzlandmuseum on Sunday afternoon, 17 May, as part of International Museum Day: activities to see, hear, marvel at and get involved in from 2 pm to 6 pm – and admission is free. The museum staff have invited special guests to help mark this highlight of the museum year. As always, the Salzlandmuseum Friends’ Association is providing active support.
While historical film footage of the town of Schönebeck flickers across the screen and cake and drinks are on offer, visitors can take short guided tours of the permanent exhibition areas on the Pömmelte ring sanctuary, shipping on the Elbe and Saale rivers and the history of salt extraction and mining in the region. As the long-standing chairman of the Staßfurt Miners' Association "Cradle of Potash Mining", Gerald Meyer has a wealth of knowledge and stories to share with interested visitors.
Elsewhere, members of the Schöpfrad studio community from Aschersleben will be on hand to help creative people customise small rucksacks and shopping bags using stencils, brushes or hammering techniques. Salt is also the focus here, with jars filled and decorated with the white gold - salt magic in a jar as another hands-on activity.
"Drawing from the full" - the current special exhibition at the Salzland Museum shows a selection of works by the studio community and some of the artists are happy to provide information about their work and techniques. The special exhibition is of course open to visitors, as are all three permanent exhibitions on the action-packed Museum Day at the Salzlandmuseum Schönebeck.
