Bernburg. Healthy teeth are important, even from a young age. The Salzlandkreis Dental Service therefore carries out regular check-ups on children in nurseries and schools, informing them about proper dental care and a diet that promotes dental health, in order to identify problems at an early stage and prevent them where possible. “We don’t just focus on the youngest children, their parents and the institutions,” says dentist Dr Leila Scholle from the Salzlandkreis Dental Service, “the issue of dental health should also be brought to the public’s attention.”
To mark Dental Health Day on 25 September, the focus is once again on this issue, and the district council’s dental service is taking part in various activities throughout September. The activities combine age-appropriate information with practical tasks, such as children practising how to brush their teeth properly, making a model tooth, preparing a healthy breakfast or learning how much sugar is contained in various foods and drinks.
As part of a major celebration to mark World Children’s Day on 17 September in Bernburg, the Dental Service is organising its own event for girls and boys from nursery schools and after-school clubs. Through play, the district’s dental staff aim to teach the children why healthy teeth are important and how they can help look after their own dental health.
The district administration in Wolmirsleben has organised another event: on 21 September, an interactive theatre performance on the theme of ‘Healthy Teeth’ will be staged there for older children from the local nurseries and pupils at the primary and special needs schools. 150 girls and boys are expected to attend. With Pipo and Pipolina, they will learn important basics about oral hygiene and healthy eating in an entertaining and playful way.
She has a special partnership with Dr Setz, a dentist in Nienburg. To mark Dental Health Day, she is inviting the children from the local ‘Entdeckerkiste’ nursery to visit her surgery so that they can familiarise themselves with a dental practice in a relaxed atmosphere and overcome any fears they may have.
About the work and services provided by the Dental Service in the Salzlandkreis district
The Dental Service at the District Administration’s Public Health Department aims to raise awareness of dental health amongst children in the Salzlandkreis from an early age and to show them that regular dental care and a healthy diet are essential for healthy teeth.
The team examines around 60 girls and boys every day across the entire district, in nurseries and primary schools, as well as in the fifth and sixth years of secondary schools and grammar schools. For children attending special schools, these check-ups may in some cases continue until the age of 18. The results of the examinations are communicated to the parents and, where necessary, supplemented with advice on visiting the dentist. The schools and nurseries are also supported as part of the preventive programme and receive, amongst other things, toothbrushes, toothpaste and information leaflets.
In addition, residential groups, clubs and other organisations can also enquire about dental health services. Options include, for example, awareness days or information sessions for parents.
