Bernburg. It was only in mid-January that there were shortages across the country, which was widely reported in the media. Up to 500 blood donations are needed every day in Saxony-Anhalt alone. It is vital to have sufficient blood reserves available at all times. Blood donations are important. They save lives. Anyone can find themselves in a medical emergency and need the solidarity of others and donated blood.

"In fact, I consider donating blood to be one of the simplest and quickest good deeds. It's an act of solidarity and a deeply human endeavour that we want to support directly and to the best of our ability." This is how District Administrator Markus Bauer explains the latest initiative of his district administration to offer blood donations in-house, for employees and also for all citizens. With this in mind, various blood donation centres were contacted. In the end, the district authority found a partner in Halle University Hospital with whom it came to an agreement.
On 15 September, an initial joint event is to be held at the district administration offices, at Karlsplatz 37 in Bernburg, from 10 am to 2 pm, to encourage as many suitable volunteers as possible to donate and provide immediate support to a central healthcare facility in the state, with no appointment or prior registration required. Posters in the district offices and leaflets will provide information, whilst social media will help raise awareness.
"At least 50 participants on this day would be a result that could be built on further," says the district administrator, thinking of a possible continuation, including at other locations of the district administration, and asking for broad support. "After all, every person who donates a small amount of blood can save up to three lives, and this is specifically for patients at Halle University Hospital.
A blood donation takes 30 to 60 minutes, the actual blood collection only about five to 10 minutes. For every donation, the Halle health centre thanks you with a snack and a 20-euro allowance.
