Bernburg. Due to delays in the renovation work on the former school building on Tolstoiallee in Bernburg, some of the pupils at the "Lebensweg" special school will probably not be able to attend classes at the alternative location until after the autumn holidays. This information comes from Thomas Michling, Chief Administrative Director of the Salzlandkreis district. "We want to have everything ready by then." Originally, the first classrooms were supposed to be ready by the new school year. However, this will not be possible. The school management of the special school has already been informed of the delays.
The former school building in Tolstoiallee in Bernburg has been empty for the past few years. The reason for this was that vapours had risen from the tar-containing floors built in the GDR, causing discomfort among pupils and teachers. Because the special school had reached the limits of its capacity, the district administration decided to comprehensively refurbish the school building. The aim is to eliminate the causes of the vapours. An independent expert will check that the building is safe. "Pupils can only be taught there if the result is correct," says Thomas Michling. He asks for understanding for the delay. In view of the pollutants found, thoroughness is more important than speed.
The location in Tolstoiallee will initially be used as a temporary branch of the special school in order to renovate the main location with the help of the "Schul(frei)räume" programme. A corresponding application has been submitted to the responsible Saxony-Anhalt investment bank.
