Calbe/Bernburg. The Salzlandkreis district not only has fertile farmland, but also excellent gravel and sand. That is why Schwenk Sand & Kies Nord GmbH & Co. KG extracts up to 1.6 million tonnes of it annually – in the Calbe districts of Schwarz and Trabitz and near Großmühlingen. District Administrator Markus Bauer and Tilo Wechselberger, head of the department responsible for district development, visited the site to find out more about the development. Managing Director Thomas Sülzle explained the gravel and sand extraction process and outlined the company's goals.
District Administrator Markus Bauer said after the meeting that the mining of raw materials has characterised the Saale region and thus the Salzland district for decades and is accepted by the population. "For me, it is important that our local companies in the Salzland district have good framework conditions so that they can plan for the long term and therefore sustainably. It is even better to hear that people from the Salzland district also work here." This means that the towns and municipalities benefit from the income tax returns and that people are available to do voluntary work for society after work. "It's a win-win situation for everyone." Markus Bauer referred to the Salzlandkreis 2030 future strategy, which also provides companies with a clear roadmap for the future of the region.
Schwenk Managing Director Thomas Sülzle explained that the quarried gravel and sand is used for bridges and roads, among other things. Large football stadiums in Germany and foundations for wind turbines have also been built with raw materials from the region. The company uses its own trains for transport, which can be loaded on the site. Around 30 employees currently work at the Saale-Dreieck site. Thomas Sülzle emphasised that the company is already thinking about the subsequent use of the mining areas in a few decades' time.
