In accordance with Saxony-Anhalt's Local Government Election Act, the administrative bodies of the district are the district council and the district administrator.
The district council represents the residents and is the main body of the district. It is elected for a term of five years. Within the framework of the law, it is responsible for all matters concerning the district, unless the district administrator is responsible by law or the district council has delegated certain matters to him.
The district council of the Salzland district is made up of the district administrator and 54 honorary members.

Fractions
At least three members of the district council are required to form a parliamentary group. Some parties and voters' associations have formed parliamentary groups before the constituent meeting of the district council. As a result, the body has the following composition:
