Aschersleben/Westdorf/SLK. The Salzlandkreis is supporting the Aschersleben district of Westdorf with a grant of 5,000 euros as it progresses to the national final of the “Our Village Has a Future” competition. With this support, the district is recognising the village community’s exceptional commitment whilst also helping with preparations for the upcoming visit by the national jury. Westdorf had previously secured the gold medal in the state final and will therefore represent Saxony-Anhalt in the national competition in 2026.
For decades, this competition has honoured villages that impress with their civic commitment, strong community and forward-looking ideas.
District Administrator Markus Bauer emphasises the importance of this success: "Westdorf impressively demonstrates what is possible when people work together. This commitment deserves to be recognised and supported. With the 5,000 euros, we want to help the village to present itself in the best possible light at the national competition." The funds will be used specifically to prepare for the jury's visit. Among other things, banners are planned to publicise projects and initiatives in the village.
Local mayor Ronny Küster emphasises the positive effect of the competition on community life in the village: "We are noticing how the community is growing. At the last Subbotnik, we were able to mobilise 45 people - this year it was already 80. Many people see how much commitment there is in the village and want to lend a hand themselves."
From the district's point of view, Westdorf is an example of living cohesion and active participation in rural areas. At the same time, the commitment shows how important voluntary work is for the quality of life in the villages of the Salzland district.
The residents are currently preparing intensively for the upcoming jury meeting. "Westdorf is not just dressing up - Westdorf is showing what community can achieve. The Salzland district is keeping its fingers crossed for the national final," says District Administrator Markus Bauer.
The "Our village has a future" competition has been organised since 1961 and is aimed at communities with up to 3,000 inhabitants. The aim is to highlight positive examples from rural areas, motivate imitators and make village life more attractive
