The financial situation of many people in the Salzlandkreis remains precarious. The latest ‘Debt Atlas Germany 2025’ published by the credit reference agency Creditreform reveals an alarming trend for the region: The over-indebtedness rate in the Salzlandkreis has risen from 10.9 per cent last year to 11.1 per cent at present. This means the region remains well above the national average of 8.2 per cent.
Behind the stark figures lie the personal stories and existential worries of those affected. The Salzlandkreis Jobcentre offers free, comprehensive and confidential debt counselling to all citizens who find themselves in financial difficulty, as well as their families. The aim of the advice is to bring about a lasting improvement in the difficult financial situation of those seeking help and to set out a clear path towards a debt-free life. “Debt relief can be achieved both through qualified debt counselling and as part of a consumer insolvency procedure,” explains Andreas Boennen, Head of Department at the Salzlandkreis Job Centre. Where necessary, the Job Centre’s staff can also refer people directly to specialist insolvency advice centres.
To ensure that debtors and their dependants can maintain a reasonable standard of living, it is possible to set up a garnishment-protected account (P-account). This is a current account offering special protection against account garnishment. From 1 July 2026, the automatically protected basic allowance will be 1,590 euros per calendar month. Additional allowances may be taken into account, for example, for dependants, child benefit or certain social security benefits, subject to proof.
